Last week we destroyed a piece of junk Asus RT-N12 router. This week, we continue our quest to find the perfect wireless router.
In last week's episode I mentioned switching to a Buffalo WHR-HPG N300 router. We decided not to keep it because of signal strength. It couldn't broadcast it's signal to the other side of my house. Still though for the devices in range the signal seemed to be very stable. If you need a router for an apartment or a smaller house this router will probably be fine.
After the Buffalo I tried the more expensive Netgear ProSafe FV5318N router. I bought it because I've used non-wireless Netgear ProSafe firewalls for small offices and they work great. Well, the FV5318N is a complete piece of junk when it comes to wireless. The biggest issue that got me to send it back was that the simple act of connecting my wife's Kindle Fire to it would cause the wireless to kick off for all wireless clients. Firmware update only made things worse. Anyway, I took it back.
Now I am using the Amped Wireless R20000G. I had never heard of Amped before this, but I have to say it seems to be working really well. It was rather pricey at $159.99 but it boasts a 10,000sq ft range. Not bad. So far it is working very well. As of this writing I will recommend it, but check with me in 8 months to see how it is still working.
